The Taxi Driver's Rank and File Coalition, which consisted of disenchanted members of the New York City Taxi Driver's Union Local 3036, was organized on April 15, 1971. The goals it attempted to achieve over its almost seven year life were a fair contract and a more democratic union. The New York City Taxi Drivers' Union, Local 3036 was formed on July 1, 1966 and elected Harry Van Arsdale, Jr., as their first President. At its peak, Local 3036 had almost 35,000 members. Local 3036 was active until the late 1980s, when it dissolved and merged with SEIU Local 74. Van Arsdale also directed the establishment of the Union's predecessor, the Taxi Driver's Organizing Committee (TDOC).
